Aly & AJ have been making a major comeback! After a decade of being out of the spotlight musically, the duo released the appropriately titled EP Ten Years in 2017, and a deluxe version of the project in 2018. In 2019, they released another EP called Sanctuary, and embarked on a tour of the same name.
On the Sanctuary tour, Aly & AJ have played the most from Ten Years and Sanctuary—both projects that stay true to Aly and AJ’s pop routes, but showcase an evolution of their style. The songs are less rock-leaning and more atmospheric than their early work, but contain the same catchy hooks and melodies that fans have always loved the duo for.
The sisters' increasing involvement in advocating for various social and political issues is also reflected in their new music—for example, the song "Star Maps," which is a subtle anti-patriarchy anthem. Aly & AJ have been especially vocal in supporting the LGBTQ community, and released their song "Good Love" during pride month.
Even though their new music is great, Aly & AJ still play many of their 00’s bangers, such as fan favorites “Rush” and “Like Whoa." I’m going to the show tonight, and personally, I cannot wait to belt out those nostalgic tunes shamelessly.
Aly & AJ’s setlist changes up from night to night, but they kickoff every show with “Church,” the airy and upbeat opening track on Sanctuary. They also close every show with the iconic smash “Potential Breakup Song.” However, they usually take the stage again for a three-song encore, which includes a cover of “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves and an acoustic rendition of one of their earliest songs, "No One." The finale is “Sanctuary,” the title track of their latest EP.
