Inside the World of Tyler: 2019 Camp Flog Gnaw Festival

Returning to Los Angeles for its 8th consecutive year, Camp Flog Gnaw lends a peek into the world of Tyler The Creator and his Odd Future associates.

Now boasting three stages, a full-variety of carnival rides and games, and exclusive merch activations, it's clear the production has scaled in size and glamor over its 8-year lifespan.

While certain Drake drama largely absorbed media headlines since Sunday night, the two-day festival had plenty of remarkable moments and nuances that make it such a unique experience.

Check out some highlights from our weekend at Dodger Stadium below:

Day 1: Saturday 11/9

Die-hard fans of Tyler and Golf Wang (his clothing line) lined the gates of Dodger Stadium early Saturday morning - eager to be first on rides, get their hands on exclusive merch, and camp out for their favorite sets.

Kicking off the day was an assortment of up-and-coming acts like Juto, ESTA, Tommy Genesis, and Slowthai - each distinctly specializing in an "alt" variety of their respective genres.

Dominic Fike warmed up the main "CAMP" stage with hits like "Phone Numbers" and "3 Nights," even calling up the London-based Bakar for their joint record, "Stop Selling Her Drugs." In-between songs he remarks that he - just last year - snuck into the very same festival.

A walk through the festival grounds makes it easy to forget such a grand-scale production once started as an indie hip-hop group's shot at making it big - so sets from Odd Future members like Left Brain, Domo Genesis, and Taco are to be expected. Even affiliated acts like The Internet and Thundercat made their way to main stages.

Domo Genesis and Thundercat both played odes to the late Mac Miller whose career blossomed hand-in-hand with theirs. Thundercat kept in theme of the weekend's surprise appearances and recruited to the set Kamasi Washington and the legendary Michael McDonald of The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan.

On the "FLOG" stage, freshly praised R&B star Summer Walker ushered in the evening with a lustrous set that was equally as candid as it was decorated. Her down-tempo, seductive lullabies gracefully complemented the set's cast of pole-dancers. She actually called on two fans to give the pole a spin...and they didn't disappoint.

Directly following - in perfect synchronicity - was Daniel Ceasar. It's unclear whether this back-to-back match-up perfectly sets the stage for cuffing season, or a break-up. Either way, both had us in our feels.

The main event and highlight of the weekend for many was that of none other than Tyler himself. Presenting himself in full "IGOR" attire and persona - the festival founder took to the stage draped in his staple blonde wig and multi-colored suit.

Opening with "Igor's Theme" off the envelope-pushing IGOR, Tyler made clear the set would fall more in line with a theatrical performance than a typical festival show. He takes a moment to thank fans - old and new - for allowing him to see that moment come to fruition.

"Thank you guys for coming out tonight...It's like the eighth one and sh*t."

He plays new album cuts like "A BOY IS A GUN" and "NEW MAGIC WAND," breaking out into spasmodic dance at random intervals. Fans often forget Tyler is as much producer, writer, and composer as he is a frontline artist or clothing designer, so he flexes his dynamic artistry with a grandiose piano solo.

The fluttering notes and chords drifted, in waves, before striking a familiar cadence. Tyler was fleshing out a long-form rendition of "EARFQUAKE." It soon caught on and the crowd was singing along to his solo. See how it played out below:

Tyler briefly stepped out of "IGOR" character to perform older fan-favorites like"911," "Boredom," and "See You Again," even going as far back as"Yonkers." See the full setlist for yourself:

Day 2: Sunday 11/10

Early acts on Sunday like Nigerian-based Santi and pop sweetheart Clairo warmed the fest for the madness ahead.

On the "CAMP" stage, FKA Twigs brought a huge and cinematic set. Donning a Victorian-esque dress, she intertwined ethereal song and dance through powerful performances of songs like her classic, "Two Weeks," and more recent"Cellophane."

Goldlink incited moshpits at the "FLOG" stage in the early evening with songs like "Maniac" and "Joke Ting." He even called on the Flog Gnaw founder, Tyler, to join him for their song, "U Say."

Sets from BROCKHAMPTON and the grammy-nominated H.E.R. carried us over into the night. YG repped the West Coast on his set with songs like "BPT" and"Suu Whoop," and even pulled a WWE-style ruse with Stormy Daniels. The adult film star who was recently entangled in a scandal with the U.S. President was called on stage, posing as a random attendee. YG asked her, along with another male fan, to state their names and say, "f*** Donald Trump," queuing his song, "FDT." Watch below:

Flocks gathered at the main stage for the highly anticipated surprise guest. For weeks, fans had been speculating that it would be Tyler's dear friend and collaborator, Frank Ocean. The elusive artist, however, did not make an appearance that night.

Instead, Tyler took to the stage to propose the following:

"I'm gonna keep it short and sweet. Can I bring a couple friends out?"

First up was A$AP Rocky, who opened with "LPFJ2," and went on to perform the Skepta-assisted, "Praise The Lord." Next was Lil Uzi Vert, who ripped through "Money Longer," and "Sanguine Paradise."

Tyler again posed the question: "Can I bring ANOTHER friend out?" Moments later, eerie strings from Drake's "Started From The Bottom" rumbled through the 50,000+ in attendance. After the song, Drake paused to greet the audience and pay respect to Tyler:

"It's really f***ing hard to do. I'm proud of you, Tyler."

Moving into cuts like"Both" and "Mob Ties," the audience was certainly responsive. He announced that he would be performing two older songs he hasn't done in years -"Feel No Ways" and"Wu-Tang Forever" - as per request by Tyler.

Unfortunately, after those songs, fans grew restless and "we want Frank" chants grew louder. Drake quickly recognized the situation and took it on the chin, "It's been love," he announced before ending his set 20 minutes early.

Maybe fan expectations weren't managed appropriately, or maybe it wasn't made clear that Drake would be the final headliner of the night. Either way, he didn't seem to be too phased by the situation, taking to Instagram to jokingly announce that he had signed a 10-year residency to the festival.
